When I joined the police department in 1982, I found that the overwhelming majority of police officers were extremely conservative. I have talked with thousands of other members of law enforcement over the years, and I have concluded that almost all cops were raised in a strict environment, and usually got spanked for defiant misbehavior. Because of that upbringing, we developed an intense dislike for the criminal element. If we didn't get away with misbehaving, why should the bad guy get away with it? We became police officers because we were tired of the bad guy doing things that we would never do. But I often wondered why some people didn't respect authority. I wondered why some people followed the rules, and some people didn't. I also wondered why conservatives were so "conservative," and liberals were so "liberal."

I think I have the answer. The difference between conservatives and liberals is God. That's right, the major difference in the two philosophies is the presence or absence of a supreme being. This major difference in attitude dictates whether or not we spank our children for misbehavior, believe in or argue against the death penalty, support or protest abortion, and recognize or ignore instructions from the Holy Bible. The conservative relies on and believes in the infinite wisdom of God. The liberal does not. Ann Coulter, in her book, Treason, writes about the "two great faiths of our time, God and Communism" Ann makes an astute observation about the difference between the two. She writes, "Liberals chose man. Conservatives chose God."

This explains why so many police officers are conservative. God demands punishment for wrongdoing. The law allows society to punish the criminal. Police officers obviously agree with that philosophy, they are the front line assault in the war on crime. Police officers believe in the death penalty. In Genesis chapter 9 and verse 6, we read, "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed." Exodus 21:12 states "He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death" The conservative relies on and believes in the infinite wisdom of God. The liberal does not.

Liberals do not believe in the sinful nature of man. That is why liberals are against punishment for wrongdoing. Liberals are against the death penalty although God clearly demands it in his Word. Most prosecutors I know are conservative. The majority of defense attorneys I have met are liberal. Liberal judges usually "go easy" on the defendant. Conservative judges are known as "tough."

In my research in the area of child discipline, I have discovered that liberals do not believe in punishing a child for wrongdoing. Misbehavior is never the fault of the child, therefore the child should not be punished for something it cannot help doing. On the other hand, the conservative approach to child discipline usually includes spanking. God clearly advocates "the rod" in child rearing. Proverbs 29:15 reads, "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. The conservative relies on and believes in the infinite wisdom of God. The liberal does not.

I have also wondered why the extreme liberal philosophy is gaining ground in our country. Working as a police detective with troubled families, I have observed one major change in our culture during the past fifty years that answers that question. The breakup of the family and the single parent household has changed the way that millions of children are raised. Over half of the children today have only one parent in their home. I have noticed a drastic difference in the attitude of children who are raised by their fathers as compared to those raised by their mothers.

What I have observed in single father families, is too much of the rod (discipline) and not enough reproof (nurturing and forgiveness), which results in a child who is very regimented and disciplined, but has very little compassion or affection for others. The extremes in these cases turn out to be volunteer soldiers or mercenaries. They grow up to be extreme right wing conservatives. Those raised in a home with all reproof and no rod (usually single mother families) end up having very little respect for authority and tend to involve themselves in ventures where they have power over others. You will find this attitude in most extreme environmentalist and animal rights activists. These groups tend to defy normal cultural or societal authority in order to protect (have authority over) animals and plants that cannot defend themselves. These children grow up to be extreme left wing liberals.

The father's philosophy is usually one of conservatism. The mother's philosophy is usually one of liberalism. With both parents in the home, the child adopts the attitude of both parents, resulting in a well-balanced philosophy about life. With one parent missing, the child adopts either the liberal or conservative philosophy, depending on which parent is in the home. Since over eighty percent of single parent homes are run by mothers, it's easy to understand why more and more children are being raised as liberals.

I don't believe as Christians, we can do anything to change the current trend in our culture. There are prophesies that refer to the culture and the mindset of the younger generation in the last days. 2nd Timothy 3:1-3 states "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,..." Along with all of the changes in attitude that are listed is the predicted change in man's attitude towards God, towards their fellow man, towards their unborn children, and in the attitude of children towards their parents.

I believe that the liberal movement has, and will continue to have, a hand in the fulfillment of Biblical prophesy. They are helping to create a generation that does not rely on or believe in the infinite wisdom of God (blasphemers). They have fought to eliminate the name of God in our schools (unthankful and unholy). They are convincing parents to raise their children in a manner that will cause them to be "disobedient to parents," The liberal advocates the right of a woman to do whatever she pleases with her own body by aborting her child (lovers of their own selves and without natural affection). The liberal has come to hate the conservative (despisers of those that are good). Unbeknownst to the radical liberal, they are preaching the religion of man, something that was predicted in 2nd Timothy in the year 66 AD. I do not believe a true Christian can be liberal. The conservative relies on and believes in the infinite wisdom of God. The liberal does not.
